Large Data Centre Cooling

The largest data centre cooling site we look after has 4 x water cooled centrifugal chillers on each corner of a very large computer room. The cooling of the condensers is achieved with an underground cooling lake. Easy access has been designed into the building to allow room to lift and shift the compressors for service and rebuilds. When one chiller fails the other chillers fill the gap and load up to satisfy demand. A chiller repair usually takes week when involving the compressor. Replacement parts are sourced from off-site warehouses. After the re-build, any issues are resolved so the machine so settles down into seamless operation

Medium Sized Data Centre Cooling

Our main data centre cooling sites usually have around 2 to 4 large air cooled chillers. N+1 so a redundant system is in standby for when a fault occurs. Customers who don’t have redundancy come in to find all their servers tripped out. Sometimes a few racks managing to hang on. Then every desk fan in the building next to propped open doors! Mezzanine Floor Data Centre Cooling

Mezzanine floors are used to blow cool air up through the racks allowing the warm air to rise out of the top and get sucked back into the top of the down flow unit. This cycle is an efficient way of moving the air around the data centre. Because of this it is also the most popular way to cool data centres. The condensate pumps are located underneath the unit. They pump out the condensation formed on the evaporators during operation. Access is achieved for chiller maintenance with the use of a suction clamp to lift the tiles

EK Propane Chiller

Propane Chillers

Propane has a long history as a natural refrigerant. We have just completed a gas leak for one of our customers. There was no refrigerant in the system on arrival- a leak on the discharge. With the fact that the refrigerant is flammable it is of significant importance to purge the system with oxygen free nitrogen before and during brazing. After the pressure test we started the evacuation process- a standard HFC vac pump is acceptable within the health and safety guide lines so long as it is switched on remotely. We have recently carried out a compressor re-build for one our customers with an industrial refrigeration plant. A Grasso screw that required ‘o’ ring replacement. We got our team to lift and shift it back to the workshop- a lot easier than doing the job on site. Strip down, fit ‘o’ rings then re-assemble. Compressor retrofit for an ammonia chiller

We have recently carried out an ammonia chiller repair for one of our customers and have to say they are very happy! A Manufacturer has given the customer a quote for replacement ammonia chillers- £200,000. The compressor was no longer manufactured. Our service manager therefore made the calculation for a different sized one. Volt x Amps = Kilowatt so we used this equation to determine compressor size. We used the old compressor bolts to fasten to a steel plate with the new compressor bolted to the steel plate. Contact Us

Air cooled ammonia chiller repair

Another company had given our customer an expensive quote. The company attended site and carried out an inspection. Our engineer found the o rings to be leaking on the compressor. The customer chose the option to have the compressor re-manufactured. A worshop or on-site are the two options for the re-build. We had it lifted out and re-built, then lifted back in again. The issue with the controller was that the LCD display had failed- showing the whole screen up in black. We stripped down the controller in our workshop. Then ordered the parts for the controller. Our engineer did the reverse of the strip down and gave all parts a good clean. We plugged it in and there were no further issues. We left it running and cleared site

Centrif. maintenance and shaft seal replacement - Chiller repair

Centrifugal Chillers

Centrifs don’t have as high a compression ratio as positive displacement compressors but they compress a lot higher volume of refrigerant. They are the choice for large tonnage applications. We have a 9 mega watt system that we look after. A common issue with centrifs is surging: when there is low load, the compressor tries to suck, stalls then tries again. This causes the impeller and high speed shaft to rock forwards and backwards causing severe damage. There is a proximity sensor to shut the machine down in this condition but grinding of the impeller against the casting can still occur. After we re-built the compressor we installed controls to shut down the chiller when the process stopped.
