The picture left is a dry cooler which can be used for free cooling during low ambient conditions in a computer room. This is a particularly effective solution in United Kingdom data centres as we have cold weather a large part of the year! During warmer weather a three-way valve switches over to send the return water from the computer room to the chiller. The chiller senses the increased load and comes on to satisfy demand. The chiller can mix the free cooler and chilled water between 10 steps on the butterfly valve. Humidifiers are often used for computer room cooling as the effect of the chilled fan coils is to dry the air. The condensation runs down the condensate pipe and down the wall outside. Dry air causes dry joint failures on the rack PCB's. A dry environment is not good for the computer engineer to work in too: dry skin and headaches are common
